Of course SEO can help your business a lot.Of what use then, is a website if it cannot be found by prospective clients when searched using search engines like google, yahoo, bing, alexa and so on? A website should be able to attract traffic that is attract prospective clients and so makes money for the company /business.

I have for many years working, researching as well as optimizing websites.And I sincerely admit,I encountered lots of wrong articles and thus made several mistakes too. But am going to save you all these mistakes and have you know all I have spent time and money researching on search engine optimization for years. Having known what SEO means and why a website need to be optimized, let's see the tested and confirmed simple ways to optimize a website to rise to the top of search-engine results and rank top in Google.

Publish relevant content :
Quality content is the number one driver of your search engine rankings and there is no substitute for great content. Quality content created specifically for your intended user increases site traffic, which improves your site's authority and relevance. Avoid using a lot of images or Flash content on your website, because this kind of content is not visible to search engines, and won't help your ranking. It goes the same for JavaScript. Images and flash objects are fun and eye appealing, but always use them with texts that describe them. Make sure your website is fast. A lot of images, Flash and Java objects will slow down the loading time, another issue taken in consideration by Google.

Update your content regularly :
You've probably noticed that we feel pretty strongly about content. Search engines do, too. Regularly updated content is viewed as one of the best indicators of a site's relevancy, so be sure to keep it fresh.

Page titles :
The page title matters a lot because, in general, the title of a page is going to be a fairly accurate description of what the page is about.So if you are targeting a specific keyword phrase with a specific page, make sure you use that keyword phrase in the page title html. That makes a huge difference. Your page title should be at least three words long and should also have the words in the right order if you want maximum impact.

Text on the page :
Another thing you have control over that makes a huge difference is the text on the page. Search engines can read words easily. If you have a page with at least several hundred words on it, then it is pretty easy for a search engine to tell what that page is about. Google simply counts the number of times each important word or each important phrase appears. They drop all the generic words like "a, an, the, so, if, are, at, etc." But, they count the other nouns, verbs and adjectives on the page. The more times a word or phrase appears, the more likely Google is to think that the page is about that word or phrase. For instance, if the phrase "search engine optimization" is mentioned several times in different spots on your page, then that page is more likely to be about search engine optimization. I wanted this page to rank high for a certain phrase which is why I included the phrase "search engine optimization and how to get ranked high and top in google" and other phrases that are closely related to that inside the main body of content on this page. Just doing that one simple thing will help the page get ranked on page one in Google and probably pretty high up there for that specific phrase.

Identify a keyword phrase for each page :
Think about how your reader might search for that specific page (with phrases like "computer training centres in Port Harcourt," "Lists of top programmers in Port Harcourt," or "best web developers in Port Harcourt, Nigeria"). Then, repeat this phrase several times throughout the page - once or twice in the opening and closing paragraphs, and two to four more times throughout the remaining content. Don't forget to use bold, italics, heading tags, and other emphasis tags to highlight keyword phrases, but don't overdo it. Never sacrifice good writing for SEO. The best pages are written for the user, not for the search engine.

Keywords in the URL:
A very vital thing that you have control over that makes a huge difference in ranking is whether or not your keywords appear in the URL structure for the page. If you are trying to get a page to rank for a specific phrase, then it helps to have that phrase (or even just the most important words) appear in the URL.For instance, it does help to keep the URL shorter.If the phrase was much longer, then I should have shortened it to just have the most important words in the URL. You also want to make sure that you have those words in the right order as they would appear when the person is typing them. Having them in the right order is important because if the words are in a different order, it might suggest that the page is about something entirely different.

Meta data :
When designing your website, each page contains a space between the tags to insert metadata, or information about the contents of your page. If you have a CMS site, the UMC web team will have pre-populated this data for you.

Title Metadata:
Title metadata is responsible for the page titles displayed at the top of a browser window. It is the most important metadata on your page.

Description Metadata
Description metadata is the textual description that a browser will use in your page search return. Think of it as your site's window display - a concise and appealing description of what is contained within, with the goal of encouraging people to enter.

Keyword Meta data
Google does not pay attention to this anymore.The META Keywords Tag is Ignored.The Google search engine ignores the META keywords tag, and has always done so. If you have received spam from some wannabe search engine optimisation " specialist " telling you that you need to add this to your site, think twice about hiring him/her, since this recommendation already gives you a hint of the extent of his/her knowledge.

Have a link-worthy site
Focus on creating relevant links within the text. Instead of having "click here" links, try writing out the name of the destination." Click here " has no search engine value beyond the attached URL, whereas " Computer Training Centre in Port Harcourt " is rich with keywords and will improve your search engine rankings as well as the ranking of the page you are linking to.

  • Avoid having duplicate pages (the same content on more than one page), because Google will only index them once.

  • Use a keyword tool (like Google Adwords Keyword tool) to find out what are the most valuable keywords for the entire website and for each page individually: those that have a high number of searches and low competition.

  • Your keywords should appear in your websites description. Go to META description, and write a short description of your website and include your most valuable keywords.

  • Write a page name and set a meta title for each one of your pages. Write descriptive page names and use different meta titles for pages, and make sure they are relevant for the content you have on the page. Google understands that each page is different, and will help each individual page " rank " in search results.

  • It's great if the anchor text linking to your website or a certain page from your website isn't something like " click here " but a keyword. If you link within your website, from one page to another, follow the same principle.

  • It is important to write posts that are 250 words or more for all pages you wish to see " rank "in Google. For each 250 words of text, try to include 2-3 mentions of the keyword you are targeting for that page.

  • Google loves frequently updated websites and fresh content, so update your blog once/twice a week. You should add a blog section to your website, if you haven't already. Have a lot of content on your website. Write a lot of posts and readers will come.

  • Try to have other websites link to your blog/ website, because the number of links directing to your website influences your rank in searches.

  • Share your website on social media: Facebook, Twitter, Google+.
